The medical profession believes however that only about 10% of the iron we ingest from food is actually absorbed, so many physicians recommend an iron containing dietary supplement.

Iron in dietary supplements can also be poorly absorbed depending on the source of the iron. It is generally accepted that Ferrous salts are absorbed somewhat better than Ferric compounds. Iron supplements can also be irritating to the digestive tract, so the correct choice of an iron supplement is important for both absorption and gastrointestinal tolerance.

Kirkman has chosen a form of iron which is highly absorbable and well tolerated. Albion Laboratories Inc. of Clearfield, Utah offers a form of iron called Ferrous bis-glycinate chelate (Ferrochel) which has been tested for both safety and absorbability in animals, adults and children. Results of their testing indicate that Ferrous bis-glycinate chelate offers a safe, absorbable form of iron which when compared to Ferrous Sulfate, a widely used form of iron in supplements, offers advantages in tolerability and bioavailability.
