If these villi become damaged in some way, such as through food allergies, bad eating habits, age, strong medications, etc. the body has reduced ability to produce the necessary enzymes to complete the digestion of offending foods. This can lead to responses such as malabsorption, nutrient deficiencies, or other digestive disorders.

The main treatment for gluten or casein intolerance has been to remove offending foods from a person's diet, also known as the GFCF (gluten-free, casein-free) diet. Though effective in the short term, removing foods does not provide an ultimate solution. Once these foods are reintroduced to the diet, symptoms return.
