Calcium citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of calcium. If calcium must be taken on an empty stomach, or if an individual has low levels of stomach acid, calcium citrate is the preferred form for proper absorption.
- Supports bone health
- Promotes healthy nerve, cardiovascular, and muscle function
- Provides a highly bioavailable form of calcium
What is CalCitrate?
CalCitrate is a daily calcium supplement that provides this essential mineral in a highly absorbable “calcium citrate” form. It can be taken on an empty stomach and is suitable even for those with low stomach acid levels.
How does CalCitrate Work?
Calcium is necessary for maintaining bone strength (as measured by bone mineral density; BMD). When calcium intake is inadequate, the body starts to break down existing bones to maintain calcium levels in the blood. Osteoporosis occurs when a bone is broken down at a faster rate than it is rebuilt, resulting in decreased BMD [1].
Calcium is also required for the critical metabolic functions of vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion.
High-protein diets (such as the standard American diet) are also known to cause increased loss of calcium from bone breakdown, and increased excretion (and decreased resorption) by the kidneys [2]. Most Americans do not get enough calcium from their diets for healthy bone and metabolic maintenance, but supplementing calcium can balance circulating calcium levels, thereby supporting bone health, cardiovascular health, and healthy nerve and muscle function [3].
