Vitamin B-12 and L-methylfolate are essential for maintaining the integrity of the nervous system and participate in key methylation reactions. In fact, B vitamins (folate, B-6, and B-12) are all involved in methylation, which is necessary for the production of monoamine neurotransmitters, phospholipids, and nucleotides in the brain . Multiple studies have shown that folate and vitamin B-6 levels in the blood are significantly, positively correlated with test scores for several domains of cognitive and neurophysiological function . B-6 is also known to catalyze the reaction that produces serotonin from its precursor 5-HTP (another component included in this blend) . Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system . By binding the GABA receptor, GABA inhibits the “fight-or-flight’ mechanisms of the mammalian neuromuscular system in response to environmental stressors, thereby promoting calm and a reduced stress level . GABA also plays a role in the development of healthy, normal neurons and synapse formations in the immature, developing brain . Studies show that GABA release in the brain is enhanced with an increase in zinc availability .
Magnesium is responsible for the biochemical action of many enzymes and reactions within the body, but unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is quite prevalent. Studies have shown a protective effect of Magnesium from ischemic damage to the brain and an inhibitory effect on the release of the stress hormone, norepinephrine . Magnesium is known to balance cellular Ca levels, regulating cell signaling pathways and neurotransmission .
Taurine, a sulfur-containing, semi-essential amino acid, is required in a certain abundance for the normal development of the central nervous system (CNS), calcium modulation, membrane stabilization, reproduction, and immunity .
